cocktail hour: pegu club

In honor of a wonderful week in Manhattan, this week's cocktail is the Pegu Club. Though most probably identify this cocktail with New York's famous Pegu Club cocktail lounge, it actually owes its origin to Rangoon (the Pegu is a river in Burma) where ex-pats (mostly military officials) imbibed this hot weather favorite.

  • Ingredients:
  • 2 ounces London dry gin
  • 3/4 ounce orange curacao
  • 3/4 ounce lime juice
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters
  • 1 dash orange bitters

  • Directions:
  • Shake well with cracked ice, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. (You can substitute Grand Marnier for orange curaƧao.)
